Helvetica Film :: Love it / Hate it?

helvetica.gif
Helvetica has gotten many great reviews. For instance: "One of the most intellectually exciting, stimulating, warm-hearted and best-made independent documentaries I've seen in a long time, Helvetica turns 26 letters into a whole new perspective on the world." -James Rocchi

But now that you've seen it, AIGA Toledo... what do you think?

This movie was interesting at many levels, even for non-designers. It's also worthy noting how design rock stars act in real life.

I enjoyed it, but probably for different reasons than everyone else. Not being a trained graphic designer, I rarely spend more than a few seconds thinking about which font (oops, type face) to pick from the menu. I am one that just chooses Helvetica because everyone else does. Does that make me part of the problem, or an example of why Helvetica is great?

I enjoyed the film because I learned some of the history of the field. It gave me a greater appreciation of how the text can affect the total experience. I look forward to more meetings where I can learn more from the local design community.

I thought it was great. Such passion (whether pro- or anti-) about one ubiquitous face. Amazing.

Great film on many levels for both designers and non-designers. Maybe I'm wrong but I think that the perception of the film has been that it is biased towards Helvetica being the "perfect" typeface. I personally like Helvetica, especially Helvetica Neue, but I do feel that without other typeface options most design would be stagnant and uninteresting. Even if Helvetica is as close to a perfect typeface as there is, it wouldn't be nearly as effective without having other type choices to view and ponder.
