AIGA Toledo is pleased to present an evening with Jesse Reed on May 24th, 2018 at 7:30 pm.
Join us for a conversation with Reed, an Ohio native who is profoundly accomplished in his young career. Most noted for his work under Michael Bierut at Pentagram, Reed assisted in the design of high profile projects for Saks Fifth Avenue, Hillary for America, and the website Upworthy. In 2017, Reed and his business partner Hamish Smyth left Pentagram to launch a truly unique work space in Brooklyn that functions as a publishing house, retail bookstore, and design studio. The bookstore, Standards Manual, began as a Kickstarter campaign to reissue the 1970 New York City Transit Authority Graphics Standards Manual, designed by Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda. The campaign was massively successful and drew interest from design nerds around the world, ultimately raising over $800,000, which encouraged Reed and Smythe to continue the project also publishing reissues of the 1975 NASA manual, 1977 EPA manual, and the New York City Transit Authority: Objects.
Reed’s design ambition does not stop at Standards Manual. His newly established studio, Order, recently worked on the identity and mark for Kickstarter, Bild (an AI-enabled platform for investing in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure), and created title design graphics for the movie everything beautiful is far away. Additionally, a pro-bono branch of their company, Change Order, is dedicated to taking on design for good projects every year.
